A case of sickle-cell haemoglobin C disease is described: it is the first finding of haemoglobin C in Africa. A random survey of 200 out-patients in Accra showed haemoglobin C to be present at a frequency of 12 per cent. Two further individuals with sickle-cell haemoglobin C disease and one who was homozygous for haemoglobin C were discovered. In addition, of nine anaemia patients examined, one was a case of sickle-cell haemoglobin C disease, and the other a haemoglobin C homozygote.
