Small steps or large jumps? Molecular dynamics simulations give new insight into the mechanism of molecular reorientation in water (see picture). Comparison with measured reorientational diffusion suggests that the reorientation of water molecules is better described by large-amplitude angular steps than by small diffusive steps. The jury is still out on this mechanism.
