The rates of degradation of14C-benefin (N-butyl-N-ethyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-p-toluidine) and14C-DCPA (dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate) were significantly faster in thatch than in soil from a Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensisL.) turf. These results suggest that herbicides applied preemergence in turf will persist for shorter periods of time because of the carbon-enriched medium (thatch) and that higher rates or more frequent applications may be required to maintain concentrations at effective levels.
