A passive dosimeter with immediate indication of dose has been developed for phosgene exposures by an adaptation of existing phosgene sensitive tape. In the past, during an emergency condition, the commercially available phosgene personal monitors have proven to be of limited usefulness since their upper ranges of measurement are typically well below life-threatening concentrations which could be encountered during a phosgene leak or spill. To resolve this situation in the event of a phosgene emergency, the dose concentration can be determined for each individual exposed by use of this phosgene dosimeter and classified into non-serious, minimal, and serious exposures. This information provides a useful guide for medical personnel in assessing the exposure and in the prescribing of therapy for phosgene exposed individuals.
