The rate of oxygen exchange between selenite ions and solvent water has been measured at 0°C over the pH range of 8.7–12.5. The rate of exchange, R, may be expressed by the rate law; R=k1[SeO32−]+k2[HSeO3−]+k3[HSeO3−]2+k4[HSeO3−][SeO32−]. The observed rates were analysed in order to obtain the values of the rate constants. The over-all exchange reaction shows a negative salt effect; this has been shown to be an equilibrium salt effect on the dissociation of the hydrogen selenite ion.
