Collapsible Massie nail links to lower morbidity and mortality vs. Jewett nail in unstable fractures.
Why the study?
The comparative effectiveness of different nail devices for internal fixation of intertrochanteric hip fractures and their impact on morbidity and mortality required evaluation.
Does the type of nail device (Massie/Synthes vs Jewett) improve morbidity and mortality in patients with intertrochanteric hip fractures?
Cohort (n=622)
Does the type of nail device (Massie/Synthes vs Jewett) improve morbidity and mortality in patients with intertrochanteric hip fractures?
For intertrochanteric hip fractures, collapsible Massie nails provide superior outcomes compared to Jewett nails, particularly for unstable fractures.
Answers are grounded in this paper and cite their sources.
Supports preferential Massie nail use in unstable fractures; hypothesis-generating and requires randomized confirmation before practice change.
Author summary Intertrochanteric fractures were treated by internal fixation using nail devices, including the Jewett nail, Massie nail, Synthes nail, or others. A decrease in morbidity and mortality and increase in satisfactory results was seen with anatomical reduction and the use of Massie or Synthes nails. Early ambulation and weight-bearing contribute to the improvement in results. Decreases in mortality may have been influenced by changes in medical care protocols. The collapsible Massie nail was superior to the Jewett nail for unstable fractures in particular due to the ability to control impaction of the fragments to a stable position.

Kyle et al. (2007) conducted a cohort in Intertrochanteric hip fractures (n=622). Massie or Synthes nails vs. Jewett nail or other devices was evaluated on Morbidity, mortality, and satisfactory results. Internal fixation using Massie or Synthes nails decreased morbidity and mortality, with the collapsible Massie nail being superior to the Jewett nail for unstable fractures.
