Modern cardiac imaging modalities, including echocardiography, CMR, and CT, provide new insights into left atrial function and structure, highlighting its role as a biomarker and therapeutic target.
Highlights the emerging role of advanced imaging modalities like echocardiographic strain, CMR, and CT in assessing left atrial function and structure for risk prediction and guiding interventions.
The left atrium plays an important role in left ventricular filling, serves as biomarker in cardiac diagnostics, and as target for therapeutic interventions. Recent developments in cardiac imaging provide new insights into left atrial (LA) function and structure, and several of these innovations are ready to be implemented in patient management. As presented in the current focus issue, LA strain by echocardiography provides important insights into both LA and left ventricular function. Furthermore, cardiac resonance imaging (CMR) and computed tomography may be used to quantify LA function and structure. This includes CMR as a means to assess fibrosis in the wall of the atrium. These imaging modalities may also be used to guide interventions on the left atrium. The left atrium is an important biomarker for prediction of risk in a number of different cardiovascular disorders and serves as marker of left ventricular filling pressure. In this focus issue on...
