Married individuals are associated with lower mortality compared with unmarried (consisting of widowed, divorced/separated, and never married) individuals (see Supplementary Reference 1). The association of marital dissolution (i.e. divorce and separation) with higher mortality is also known (see Supplementary Reference 2). Furthermore, married individuals are associated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease and lower coronary heart disease and stroke mortality compared with unmarried (including never married, divorced, and windowed) individuals (see Supplementary Reference 3).
