Three-phase induction motors admit a complex-valued space state representation. In this paper, this complex description is used to design a torque controller and a rotor flux observer based on sliding modes. The advantage of using the complex representation is an order reduction of the system and a simplification of the analysis. The obtained results are illustrated by means of numerical simulations.
