A simple, inexpensive, volumetric, subsampling apparatus for processing macroinvertebrate samples is described. Random mixing of the macroinvertebrates was consistently achieved with the subsampler when applied to either lotic or lentic samples. Protocols for the use of the subsampler are forwarded for the situations when either reliable population density estimates or only general trends in community composition and abundance are required.
