We report the successful synthesis of 30 wt% In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 nanocomposites by heating the precursor obtained via a mechanochemical reaction, and investigate their gas-sensing properties. The samples were characterized by means of x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Subsequent thermal treatment of the precursor for 2 h in air at 700 °C resulted in the formation of In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 nanocomposites with an average crystal size of about 22 nm. In comparison to pure SnO 2 , the gas sensor fabricated from the as-synthesized In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 nanocomposites has an excellent gas-sensing performance, such as high sensitivity (93 for 1000 ppm C 2 H 5 OH), a rapid response rate (within 5 s for 90% response and recovery times) and high selectivity to ethanol. To explain the enhanced sensitivity of the In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 gas sensor, the gas-sensing mechanism is discussed.
