W-Ni-Fe-Mo powders were mixed and sintered at 1100 °C and 50 MPa pressure, using spark plasma sintering method. The sintering parameters were optimized for 90W-7Ni-3Fe alloy and the effect of Mo addition on the final mechanical properties of the alloy (xW-7Ni-3Fe-yMo) was studied in detail. Addition of molybdenum has resulted in greater sinterability of xW-7Ni-3Fe-yMo alloys. The mechanical properties were found to be dependent on the grain size of tungsten and the homogeneity of the microstructure. It was observed from the results that, 74W-7Ni-3Fe-16Mo alloy exhibits highest strength (1150 MPa) and highest sintered density (92.65%) as compared to the other xW-7Ni-3Fe-yMo alloys under investigation. The tensile fracture surface microstructure is characterized as tungsten–tungsten inter-granular separation, tungsten trans-granular cleavage, matrix ductile rupture and local matrix rupture on the separated tungsten–tungsten interfaces.
