After a brief review of the structure of electron pulses from a linear accelerator and the properties of the electrical and magnetic fields set up by a beam of relativistic electrons, the authors describe a beam position monitor designed and used by them with the linear accelerator at CEN Saclay. A description of operation then follows, with indications of possible applications.
