The first solid-state 109Ag cross-polarization magic-angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR spectra of biologically relevant Ag+ thiolates are reported. The principal values of the 109Ag NMR shielding tensors were determined for [Ag5L3(LH)3](ClO4)2 (L = S(CH2)3NMe2) and AgS(CH2)3CH3 by the method of Herzfeld and Berger. Together, the chemical shift parameters provide information about the different environments surrounding Ag in these compounds. Good agreement is found between these data and solution 109Ag NMR data on Ag8MT (MT = metallothionein), a protein with exclusive Ag−S(cysteine) bonding.
