Thermal decomposition of gaseous fluoroacetic acid in silica at 295–382°C gives carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, silicon tetrafluoride, and fluoroacetyl fluoride as main products. Elimination of hydrogen fluoride appears to be the initial step in decomposition, followed mainly by formation of formaldehyde and carbon monoxide.
