The preernergence applied herbicides tested provided acceptable weed control in watermelon and cantaloupe for one month after planting. Plots treated with ethalfluralin had satisfactory yields, good weed control, and no crop injury. Bensulide and the sodium salt of naptalam in combination also resulted in satisfactory weed control for one month after planting. Clomazone provided good weed control be resulted in foliar injury expressed as folk whitening and reduced yield. Chemical names used: 0,O-bis(l-rnethlethyl) S-[2-[@henylsulfonyl) arnino] ethyl] phosphorodithioate (bensulide); 2-[2chlmophenyl) methyll4, 4-dimethyl-3-isoxamlidinone (clornazone); Nethyl-N- (2-rnethyl-2-propmyl)-2,6dinih-o-4-(kifluo~ (ethalflural'in); (sodium 2-[(1-naphthalenylamino) carbonyl] benzoate (sodium salt of naptalam).
