A scheme for the statistical description of the geometry of a river network can be devised by focusing attention on the statistics of junctions. The statistics of a river network can also be regarded as the outcome of a stochastic branching process. The connection between the two possible statistical descriptions of river networks is given and, as an example, the case of a river network that has a constant bifurcation ratio (‘Horton net’) is discussed.
