Experiments with Daphnia hyalina demonstrated that the phototactic reaction to changes in light intensity is strongly enhanced in the presence of a chemical substance mediated by juvenile perch. In constant light intensity, the daphnids were found close to the bottom of the experimental aquarium. The phenomenon may result in a diel vertical migration. This would decrease predation pressure near the surface.
