The essential oils of leaves and fine stems of five specimens of Lippia grandis collected at different places in the Amazon were analysed by GC–MS. These oils presented two distint chemical profiles. The percentage of the main identified compounds varied with the plant part, season time and collection site: thymol (19.3–69.7%), 1,8‐cineole (22.2–56.0%), carvacrol (0.2–21.2%), (E)‐nerolidol (0.8–21.1%), α‐pinene (0.1–17.4%), p‐cymene (4.0–14.0%), thymol methyl ether (1.0–14.0%) and β‐caryophyllene (0.7–12.1%). Based on the results, we believe to have at least two chemical varieties for Lippia grandis in the Amazon: the thymol and 1,8‐cineole types.
