To introduce students to the beauty and utility of mathematics in a way that will change negative attitudes, give students a sense of accomplishment, and broaden perspectives, we have developed a Mathematics and Culture course. The focus of the course is that mathematics is a human endeavor complete with all aspects of human creativity and invention. In this paper we will make an argument for teaching this course and describe it in sufficient detail so that an interested reader will be able to use and modify our ideas to design a similar course or incorporate some of these ideas into existing courses.
