Four butterfly-like binuclear Ru( ii )–Ru( ii ) and Ir( iii )–Ru( ii ) complexes were designed and synthesized via a stepwise method by Ru( ii )/Ir( iii ) metalloligands containing polypyridine (bpy)/phenylpyridine (ppy), phenanthroline (phen) and bibenzimidazole (BiBzIm) moieties.
