Aluminum chloride induced reaction between cyclopentadiene and alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes results in the stereoselective formation of the products of a formal [4 + 3] cycloaddition. The reaction proceeds by a tandem Diels-Alder reaction/ring expansion.
