(1) The basic weight-temperature curve for insects is a rectangular hyperbola. It is profoundly affected by quality of diet. (2) Genetic variation in pupal weight is due to variation in the responses of development and growth to temperature. (3) In good conditions, the weight-temperature curves for different genotypes meet at average field temperatures. (4) Insect stocks held at high temperatures, or on poor diets, will self-select away from wild-type.
