Sensitivity in the lower ppb range for ozone detection by a photoacoustic system based on a low repetition rate and a quasicontinuous wave (QCW) frequency quadrupled Nd:YAG laser system is demonstrated. The two systems were compared from various points of view such as available UV light power, minimum detectable ozone concentration, photoacoustic signal generation efficiency, as well as simplicity of construction and ease of operation. The QCW‐based system was found to have the potential in practical applications due to its relative simplicity and compactness. Therefore, after laboratory calibration it was tested at an environmental monitoring station: it was run in parallel with a routinely used ozone measuring instrument, where it showed reliable operation.
