When Co nanocrystals are ordered in hexagonal arrays, the formation of core−shell Cohcp/CoO nanocrystals occurs, whereas nanocrystals in disordered areas or isolated in the substrate tend to fully oxidize to pure CoO. This shows the enhanced stability against oxidation due to 2D self-organization of hcp Co nanocrystals.
