The 10‐ to 20‐year goal of the U.S. Navy physical oceanography program is to acquire the capability of accurately predicting the state of the ocean for marine forecasting, search and rescue operations, and pollution control. This ‘ocean forecasting’ is the oceanic equivalent of today's global atmospheric weather forecasting. A workshop, ‘Ocean Forecasting,’ was held in June 1976 at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, to assess navy needs in prognostic and synoptic modeling and to define a preliminary long‐term ocean forecasting plan. Numerical modeling experts from the academic community, industry, and naval laboratories attended as well as navy users.
