Chemical functionalization can help separate semiconducting from metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Depending on their geometry, SWNTs can be either metallic or semiconducting (see image). They are so far the only known material to possess this unique property. For electronic applications it is of vital importance to separate the two materials. Recent advances in separation techniques, based on chemical functionalization, are described.
