The treatment of teeth with subgingival fractures is complicated by the need to maintain a healthy periodontium. In treatment planning for these teeth, the position and the circumferential extent of the fracture are of considerable importance. However, the severity of fracture subgingivally is probably the most important variable influence on treatment planning. In this paper teeth with subgingival fractures are classified into four treatment categories according to the depth of fracture. Treatment alternatives are given for each category and emphasis is given to those procedures which best predispose to a favourable gingival relationship.
