The breeding migration of individual Taricha rivularis is quite precise: animals return each year to the same region of a stream, i.e., within roughly 50 feet. Most of the oriented movement takes place on land, but there may be a short aquatic leg to the migration. Once in the water, most animals remain within an area approximately 50 feet in length. Moves of greater length normally are followed by a return to the preferred area.
