Potentiostatic anodization of Bi has been performed in H2SO4, benzoate, NaH2PO4, Na2HPO4, and borate solutions at 30 C. While the results in H2SO4 are not satisfactory, good films are obtained in the other solutions, and straight log i/log t relations are observed. A simple procedure has been described in order to calculate field/log growth rate relations from potentiostatic i/t curves. The resulting straight lines indicate the validity of the method, and prove that ionic conduction is under high field conditions. In this respect, the law of Guntherschulze and Betz is a good means to express the results. Data on Та in borate solutions are included for comparison. The procedure of calculation is also valid for Та.
