The identification of four different and dominant genes conditioning the resistance reaction of Coffea arabica to Hemileia vastatrix has enabled us, following Person's method of analysis, to apply Flor's theory to this host–parasite system as well as to infer the genotypes of each of the twelve physiologic races used in this work, and predict the likely occurrence of four rust races which are not yet known. These data, together with the knowledge of the geographical distribution of the rust races, provide the basis of a coffee breeding program which is designed to improve resistance to H. vastatrix.
