Preoperative fasting triggers hypoglycemia during propranolol therapy in Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome.
Why the study?
The management of Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome with beta-blockers and the risk of preoperative hypoglycaemia during fasting is clinically relevant but not well documented.

Hypoglycemia risk during preoperative fasting warrants caution in Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome patients on propranolol; leaves open optimal perioperative protocols.
Baines et al. (1999) conducted a case report in Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome (n=1). Propranolol and preoperative fasting was evaluated on Hypoglycaemia. A patient with Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome receiving oral propranolol developed hypoglycaemia during the preoperative fasting period prior to cochlear implantation.
