The aim of this work was to characterize the physiological effects of an alkaloid preparation obtained from Macleaya cordata , containing mainly sanguinarine, on the gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens. Two groups of chickens were fed for 35 days either a control wheat-soybean diet without supplement or with 20 mg/kg dose of the alkaloid preparation (C and A groups, respectively). Diet supplemented with A caused a lower pH in proventriculus digesta, but without any changes in the pH value in the rest of the gut. When compared to the control chickens, the A dietary treatment significantly increased the activity of mucosal maltase (28.0 versus 38.8 µmol/min/g) and lowered duodenal villus. Caecal SCFA concentration and pool were significantly decreased in the sanguinarine group, however caecal ammonia and putrefactive short-chain fatty acids concentrations as well as bacterial activity of potential harmful β-glucosidase and β-glucuronidase activity were not increased in the A treatment. The serum glucose concentration was significantly reduced and the level of HDL-cholesterol was increased (P < 0.05 versus the control group) after dietary supplementation with the alkaloids preparation. The most significant results of the dietary alkaloids preparation used in broiler diet was a decrease in the concentration of SCFA in the caecal digesta from 100 to 58 µmol/g and in the pool of SCFA from 173 to 126 µmol/kg BW. It indicates that the alkaloid extract from Macleaya cordata inhibits the fermentation processes in the caeca.
