Several applications for use of solar energy in poultry production have been presented. Results of this research have shown that a high percentage of fossil fuel energy can be replaced by solar energy. Solar energy also has been used to supplement fossil fuels for brooding and for maintaining a more acceptable environmental temperature in cage layer houses. Among the various systems described, flat plate collectors with liquid or rock storage have furnished a higher percentage of total heat required. Collector systems not utilizing storage furnished a smaller percentage of total heat, but required less initial investment. More research and development will be needed to prove economic feasibility.
