Squashed coins can be used to illustrate structural analysis. Recognizing the original shape of a deformed object allows speculation on the deformation path. Coins flattened by trains are easily recognized and provide a familiar deformed example for small groups of geology students to describe and discuss. This small-group discussion results in an appreciation of the power of structural analysis and how it applies to deformed rocks.
