NZB mice and NZB/NZW hybrids
Design
Observational study of spontaneous carditis
Provides spontaneous murine model of autoimmune pancarditis; leaves open translation to human rheumatic disease.
The NZB mouse and its NZB/NZW hybrid spontaneously develop carditis as they age. This carditis is characterized by an inflammatory process that includes pancarditis, valvulitis and arteritis. Anitschkow cells are present in many areas of inflammation. In some areas there are discrete lesions similar to Aschoff bodies.
