No tolerance to barbital developed in cats after long continued administration by stomach tube of hypnotic doses. 2. During the first few days of administration to cats of a small dose of barbital cumulative effect appeared. Later with continuance of the same dose this disappeared again due, it is suggested, to excretion gaining upon absorption as with the bromides. This cycle was repeated when the dose was increased. 3. Except in one animal neither cumulative effect nor tolerance developed in cats after long continued administration of hypnotic doses. In the one animal which was the exception the drug was more depressant from the beginning. Some increase in its effect developed but a subsequent decrease in its effect did not occur.
