Monte Carlo simulations of the hydrophobic interaction between a spherical CH4 molecule and a flat paraffin wall yield the surprising result that the water does not drive the methane molecule into contact with the wall, but rather fayours a solvent-separated configuration in which the methane molecule is separated from the wall by one monolayer of water molecules.
