Elastic properties of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ single crystals and thin epitaxial films were measured at room temperature by means of Brillouin scattering. The elastic stiffnesses, which reflect a pseudo-tetragonal symmetry of the elastic properties, were determined for both kinds of samples. For the single crystals, only small differences from the previously published data were found. For the thin films, a significant hardening of the shear stiffness C 55 (15%) was observed, in contrast with the softening usually obtained for many compounds.
