We conducted a retrospective study of 116 hospitalized psychiatric patients treated with neuroleptic drugs. Nineteen of 45 cocaine users (42%) and 10 of 71 nonusers (14%) developed dystonic reactions during their hospitalizations. Based on this statistically significant finding, we suggest that cocaine use is a major risk factor for acute dystonic reactions.
