The new one-dimensional quaternary thiophosphate K3CeP2S8 has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The structure consists of one-dimensional 1∞[CeP2S8]3- chains separated from one another by K+ cations. The linear chains are built upon an infinite 1D array of 9-fold sulfur coordinated CeIII polyhedra on which [PS4] tetrahedra are condensed. The yellow color of the material is discussed in terms of a Ce-f → Ce-d transition evidenced by band structure calculations.
