ITS, rpl16 and trnG sequences, together with morphological data, were used to circumscribe the European problematic taxa within the Sciuro-hypnum reflexum complex. Strongly supported monophyletic clades sustain several of the target taxa as distinct species ( S. reflexum, S. starkii, S. tromsoeense, S. glaciale, S. dovrense, S. latifolium ). The segregation of S. nelsonii and Brachythecium glaciale var. gelidum is found to be inconsistent with our results and the two taxa are therefore synonymized.
