Does a 14-week body weight reduction program improve insulin sensitivity in obese ponies?
A 14-week body weight reduction program significantly improves insulin sensitivity in obese, insulin-resistant ponies, highlighting the importance of nutritional management in equine metabolic syndrome.
Weight loss effects on IR in EMS ponies remain unclear; hypothesis-generating pending prospective trials.
Ungru et al. (2013) studied Obesity and Insulin Resistance (Equine Metabolic Syndrome) (n=15). Body weight reduction program (BWRP) was evaluated on Insulin sensitivity index (SI). A 14-week body weight reduction program significantly improved insulin sensitivity in initially insulin-resistant obese ponies, increasing the insulin sensitivity index from 0.58-0.59 to 7.6-13.7 x10^-4 min^-1/µU/ml.
