Preparation and performance of sulfonate ionselective electrode of the liquid membrane type are described. Using an ion associate of 2 × 10-4M Crystal Violet-sulfonate extracted into nitrobenzene as liquid membrane, benzenesulfonate and dodecylbenzenesulfonate ion electrodes show a Nernstian linear relationship between membrane potentials and logarithmic concentrations up to 5 × 10 -5 and 3 × 10-6 M, respectively, but membrane potentials decrease in the lower concentration. In the case of dodecylbenzenesulfonate ion electrode, membrane potential is constant beyond the concentration of 1 × 10-3M, indicating the formation of the micelle. The sensitivity of ion electrode of liquid membrane type dependes on extractability of appropriate ion associate in liquid membrane which is governed by ion-exchanger, organic solvent, etc. Extractability of ions is also closely connected with selectivity of ion-electrode. Ion-selective electrode of liquid membrane type described in this paper are easy to prepare and work quite well for measurement of benzenesulfonate and dodecylbenzenesulfonate ions.
