The ionization constant of alginic acid as anion polyelectrolyte has been determined potentiometrically at a constant ionic strength of 1.0 mol dm−3. The experimental observations showed that alginic acid takes up 5.4 mequ. Na+/g at pH = 3.3 and the pK is 2.93 at 25°C. The mechanism of sol‐gel transformation in relation to the ionization constant is discussed.
