We redescribe the male and female of Dermacentor. (Indocentor) steini Schulze, which has been a lost taxon since was described with 2 subspecies, steini and leviculus. From study of the Schulze type materials and about 19,200 other specimens, we conclude that the taxon leviculus (and also the taxon Indocentor ater Schulze) is a junior synonym of steini. Dermacentor (I.) steini is the most abundant member of the subgenus Indocentor in our collections, is widely distributed in Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, the Indonesian and Philippine archipelagos and Borneo, and has become established in New Guinea. This species is more closely related to D. (I.) auratus and D. (I.) atrosignatus than to D. (I.) compactus but is distinguished by the moderate to long coxa I spurs and the dull grayish scutal enamel of both sexes. The female external genitalia are broadly triangular and the dorsum integument has few or no setae. The male pseudoscutum is broader than long and the margins are broadly rounded; the brown median line of the scutum is discontinuous for a short distance posterior to the pseudoscutum.
