Bluegreen 5 (Cyanobacteria) growing on the leaf surfaces of understory plants in a tropical rainforest can ospheric nnitrogen.Rates of fixation are strongly influenced by the presence of glucose and pied: nutrients leached from the host leaf, by light intensity as it relates to the photosynthetic rates of the algae, and by desiccation especially as it is influenced by the co-occurrence of epiphyllous bryophytes.A signific ant portion of this newly fixed nitrogen is transferred to the host leaf and may account for 10-25% of the total nitrogen in a leaf.
