Summary The distribution of a number of characters among the spccics of Neopanax and Pseudopanax is examined. It is concluded that these spccics form a single genus occurring in Chile, New Zealand, Tasmania, New Caledonia, and China. Pseudopanax has priority. The following new combinations are made: Pseudopanax ammalum, P. simplex, P. tolensoi, P. arboreum, P. laetum, P. ktrmadectnse, P. davidii, P. delavayi, P. rostbornii, P. gmmii, P. scopoliae . The characters distinguishing Stilbocarpa and Kirkophytum are considered to be insufficient. It is recommended that these genera be re‐united. A key recognising four genera of Araliaceae in New Zealand is provided.
