Diagrammatic presentations of verbal materials might be superior to tables because they emphasize contiguity among the items to be learned. In this study, diagrams were superior learning devices, although Ss preferred tables. As in prose research, a horizontal arrangement of the associates was superior but only if the concept label was left-most. The important factor seems to be whether dominant oculomotor habits correspond to the conceptual processing strategy employed by Ss.
