A new adaptiveh-refinement strategy is investigated for a perfect electric conducting rectangular target using the electric field integral equation. The strategy excludes cells below a specified size from theh-refinement process when their errors have not improved despite previous refinement. By doing this, the algorithm prevents edge cells from being divided repeatedly at the detriment of other regions of the domain. The performance of severalh-refinement strategies using discontinuity error estimators is compared. The proposed strategy is shown to offer an improved accuracy/efficiency trade-off in the computed radar cross section.
